Banana, Date and Chocolate Smoothie Bowl

Smoothie bowls, in my humble opinion, are some of the best breakfasts you can have. I love just chucking in any fruit that maybe's turned a bit too soft and squidgy and blending it up with some cacao powder and cinnamon and serving with granola and nut butter...you can practically hear me drooling from my keyboard. And whilst the tropical and summer flavours are always incredible, sometimes a sweeter, more indulgent and chocolatey flavour can just hit the right spot, and this is why I decided to play around with this particular combination. As I've said many times, I often end up having breakfast on the go and don't have time for a deeply filling option, so a banana blended up in the smoothie is perfect for me. Plus, the dates give the smoothie bowl and extra deep sweetness that I love and that complements the bitterness of the cacao powder perfectly.

Filled to the Brim!

One of the other things I love about smoothie bowls is the amount of nutrients you can fit into just one recipe. You wouldn't even know they are in there to be honest, and if you're smart with the powders and supplement mixes you add to the recipes they can be an excellent way of getting the extra vitamins you need - once everything is blended no one would be able to tell! This particular recipe is filled with the following:

  • Bananas - a nutritional powerhouse, they are filled with potassium which helps to regulate a healthy heart and are high in fibre, which can lead to a healthy gut
  • Dates -filled with minerals such as phosphorus, calcium and vitamin K, which is needed for healthy, strong bones
  • Cacao Powder - this is rich in copper, magnesium and zinc, all of which help to nourish energy levels, support active minds and contribute to the protection of cells from oxidative stress
  • Protein Powder - I use Pulse's Unflavoured Soy Protein, and soy protein is a brilliant meat-free alternative that contains all nine essential amino acids and contributes to healthy heart-function and may possibly have anti-cancer effects.

Then depending on which fruit you decide to add on top, you're just adding even more goodness!! What's not to love, right?

Ingredients

  • 2 bananas
  • 6 medjool dates, pitted (any other dates also work too)
  • 1 tsp ground sweet cinnamon
  • 20g protein powder (I use Pulse's Unflavoured Soya Protein powder, but you can use any that you wish)
  • 10g cacao powder
  • 1 tbsp peanut butter
  • 400ml almond milk
  • Additional: granola, fruit for on top (aka. plums, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, extra banana)

Instructions

  1. In a food blender of processor, place the bananas, dates, and peanut butter into the bowl and blitz for a minute.
  2. Add in the protein powder, cacao powder and almond milk and continue blitzing until the mixture is completely creamy and has the texture of a thick smoothie.
  3. Pour the smoothie into two bowls and top with any toppings you would like - I love to serve mine with some granola and then some blueberries and strawberries but you can make it your own and choose whatever you like.
  4. Enjoy!
